Description
Howard Hill gives a detailed webinar on how engineers can help facility owners react rationally when hearing of a structural failure and fearing that something may go wrong with their own structures. When such disasters occur, it is human nature to imagine the worst, that something similar is likely to happen to them unless they “do something.” Under these conditions, reactions are not always rational and, as a result, limited resources are often spent in ways that are not particularly efficient or effective. Helping facility owners rationally consider the significance, if any, of the failure of some other structure is a worthy service.
Learning Objectives:
-Understand the frequency (or infrequency) of structural failures in the United States
Recognize three main components of structural reliability – design, construction, and maintenance
-Learn how to help building owners comprehend connections (or lack thereof) between failed structures and their own.
-Where appropriate, understand ways to help building owners prioritize resources when it comes to restoring confidence in the reliability of their structures.
