Committees & Cocktails: SEAOI Summer Happy Hour

Join us on Tuesday, August 25th, from 4:30–6:30 PM at South Branch (100 S. Wacker Dr., Chicago, IL) for SEAOI's Summer Happy Hour — an evening built for connecting, unwinding, and finding your place within the association. Drinks and appetizers are on us!

This year, we're putting the spotlight on our committees. Representatives from each will be on hand throughout the evening, so if you've ever wondered what it's like to serve on a committee — or which one might be the right fit for you — this is your chance to ask questions, hear firsthand experiences, and meet the people already doing the work.

Whether you're drawn to mentorship and networking with the Young Engineers Committee (YEC), passionate about advancing women in the field through WiSE, invested in equity and inclusion with our EDI Committee, interested in shaping policy through Government Affairs/SEPAC, or curious about Building Codes, Continuing Education, Sponsorship, Symposiums, or Dinner Meetings — there's a seat at the table for you.

Bring a colleague, bring your questions, and come find your committee.

A heartfelt thank you to the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) for generously sponsoring this event. Their continued support of SEAOI and our mission means the world to us, and it's because of partners like AISC that we're able to bring our members together for evenings like this one.

This event is free, but guests must register before attending to ensure proper head count.

Future Ready Structures – A Call to Action

The world is changing in surprising and potentially disruptive ways.  Climate change, the energy transition, AI, and rapid urbanization are just a few of the trends that engineers must consider in the design of infrastructure.  Given the inherent uncertainty in these trends, engineers can no longer just extrapolate from past experience.  Instead, we need new tools to create economical and adaptable designs for an unpredictable future world.  In this talk we will explore an approach that emphasizes strategic thinking and scenario planning to help make decisions in an uncertain future environment.  We will showcase several innovative designs from the speaker’s practice that illustrate how the application of the framework can be used to create sustainable, resilient, and adaptable buildings that are Future Ready.

    Learning objectives:

    • Use scenario planning to frame uncertain future outcomes.
    • Apply the Future Ready framework to the design of buildings and other infrastructure.
    • Identify how future ready concepts are used in codes, standards, and research.

    Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

There will be two training sessions, one in September and one in October. Both will cover the same material but the multiple dates are to give more options.

The Illinois law passed in 2019 requires individuals with licenses issued by DPR that require CE to renew their license also complete 1 hour of CE on the topic of sexual harassment prevention training, which satisfies one of the “Laws and Regulation” area hour requirement in the NCEES tracker. Please note IL renewals require these core hours for renewal:

    1)      A minimum of one hour of sexual harassment prevention training.

    2)      A minimum of one hour of programs, courses, or activities in the area of Illinois statutes and rules that regulate professional engineers and professional engineering.

    3)      A minimum of one hour of programs, courses, or activities in the area of professional conduct and/or ethics.

This course has specific examples for structural engineers, and uses the content provided by IDHR as the foundation to ensure everything required for state license renewal is included.  As a state requirement, this 1 hour seminar can be used to fulfill 1 Continuing Education hours. SEAOI is pleased to offer this training free of charge to our members.
