    SEAOI Mutual Mentorship Initiative

What: Small group (3-4) virtual career mentorship facilitated by SEAOI

    Where: Virtual

    When: Quarterly Coffee/Lunch/Afternoon Break meetings

Who: All structural engineers, with emphasis on SEAOI (SEAOI membership preferred but not required)

How: Survey - Deadline to Submit: 10/3/25!

Sign up to receive the link to the survey!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who is this for?

All structural engineers looking to share experiences and learn from others in the industry

    What does mutual mentorship mean?

Mutual mentorship shifts away from traditional one-on-one mentorship to a group setting and encourages multi-directional coaching and experience sharing. You are not signing up to specifically be a “mentor” or “mentee”, but grouping will bring together members with a variety of years of experience.

    How will I be grouped?

Take the matching survey. SEAOI volunteers will use this hierarchy for matching:

    • Best days of the week availability
    • Affinity mentorship groups set up, if enough interest shown for a topic
    • Diversity of fields (unless field-specific affinity group chosen)
    • Years of experience

    What is my time commitment?

    • Formal groupings last for one year and commit to (4) 1-hour meetings per year
    • Quarterly Coffee/Lunch/Afternoon Break meetings

    Will I have discussion support?

    Who is SparkShop?

    • SparkShop is a Chicago nonprofit “on a mission to inspire and mobilize the next generation of engineers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and manufacturing geniuses.”
    • They developed a hands-on program where 4th and 5th graders explore engineering in their classrooms.
    • Their lesson plans, training, and materials are free to teachers and students.

    Why SparkShop?

    • SparkShop’s program targets schools with students who are underrepresented in STEM on the basis of race, gender, and socioeconomic status.
    • A goal of the EDI Commitee is to increase representation of underrepresented groups within the structural engineering profession. We believe this starts with exposing kids at a young age.

Metra NICTD 4th Track at Millenium Station

As the demand for public transit from Indiana increases, the Van Buren and Millennium Station track reconfiguration and tunnel extension project is a critical final piece to help bring more trains and passengers to downtown Chicago. With a contract price of $100M to perform most of the infrastructure, all the track, signal and overhead catenary work associated with the project adds another $75+M in force account oversight performed by Metra personnel. The under-track tunnel at Van Buren will extend to accommodate another ADA accessible island platform supported by hundreds of micropile. New and extended platforms at Millennium will add a whole new track to service passengers in the NICTD depot. New catenary structural steel, supported by large helical piles, is replacing old, obsolete structures that will eventually be removed. Other upgrades will consist of adding a new electrical duct bank for new switch heaters, providing power to the switch heaters, new storm sewer drains and upgrading ADA access in the area. As a fourth mainline track is added from 11th Place bridge to Millennium, many yards tracks are also being reconfigured to add train storage outside of the peak rush hour times. The project footprint is from 11th Place St. to Millennium depot and is scheduled to be completed in late 2026.

Join YEC for a site visit!

    Thursday, October 2nd at 12pm

70 E Lake – meet in the lobby and we will walk down to Millennium from there. Walk through will last around 2 hours

3D Printing with Steel – An Emerging Tool for Structural Engineers

Steel additive manufacturing (AM), otherwise know as 3D printing with steel weldment, is an emerging technology that opens new design possibilities for structural engineers. AM offers a host of potential strategic benefits to the engineering community, including optimization of structural components, free-form design of complex shapes, and an alternative to costly and complex fabrication. AISC engaged a group of industry leaders to design and construct a full-scale structure as proof of concept for AM’s design, fabrication, and aesthetic possibilities. Dave will share his insights about the design, engineering, and production of a pedestrian bridge comprised of AM components that was unveiled at the North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC), in April 2025.

    Learning Objectives

    • Attendees will learn what steel additive manufacturing (AM) is, and how it can benefit the structural engineering industry.
    • Attendees will understand the current capabilities and limitations of steel additive manufacturing processes and equipment.
    • Attendees will see and better understand how additive manufacturing is performed using robots, build plates, and positioners.
    • 1 hour of CE credit

    Location

    Cliff Dwellers Club
    200 S. Michigan Ave, 22nd Floor
    Chicago, IL 60604

    • Cliff Dwellers Salad of Baby Greens with Balsamic Mushroom Vinaigrette
    • Roast Prime Rib of Beef Au Jus
    • Chocolate Mousse with Berries
